I worked on the Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay in the late 80's and 90's. From time to time entertainers (primarily country acts) would come down to perform free concerts as part of the USO tour and would actually interact with the base residents so I had the opportunity to meet, and talk to, people like Randy Travis, Charlie Daniels, The Judds, Lee Greenwood, Carlene Carter, Nicolette Larson and the 70s group (2/3rds of them, anyway) America. All of them were very personable, friendly and outgoing. And, best of all, their concerts were free.
There were also groups of athletes, mostly retired, who came down under the sponsorship of Miller Lite, who took part in some Base activities such as Golf & Fishing tournaments and as awards presenters at the annual Base athletic awards banquets. I had the opportunity to play golf with Bill Bergey (Eagles & Bengals), Bob Tucker (NY Giants) and 7'4" Tom Burleson from NC State & the NBA among many others. Needless to say, they all had "war" stories to tell, the majority of which were both hilarious and filthy. And the best thing about that group was they brought the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders with them.
And, finally, when I was flying from Boot Camp to Ft. Leonard Wood, I was in the airport that was then known as Idlewild (now Kennedy), in NYC, and I saw Kim Novak, wearing her trademark color, a lavender blouse and black slacks. Yum Yum! Although it was 45 years ago I remember it like it was yesterday.
